How to Make Your Perfume Last All Day

Fragrance 101 · 5 min read

You spray your favourite scent in the morning and by lunch it's gone. Sound familiar? Fragrance longevity is mostly about how you apply and store it. Master these eight habits and your perfume will stay with you from morning to midnight.

1. Moisturise first — scent clings to hydrated skin

Fragrance evaporates faster from dry skin. Apply an unscented moisturiser (or a matching body lotion) to your pulse points right before spraying. The oils give the scent something to hold onto, adding hours of longevity.

2. Apply to warm pulse points

Spray where blood runs close to the surface and gently warms the skin: wrists, base of the throat, behind the ears, inside the elbows, and behind the knees. This warmth diffuses the scent naturally throughout the day.

3. Never rub your wrists together

It feels instinctive, but rubbing creates friction and heat that shatters the delicate top notes — making your perfume fade faster. Spray, then let it dry on its own.

The single most common mistake? Rubbing your wrists. Spray and walk away.

4. Spray onto skin, not just clothes

Fragrance develops differently on warm skin than on fabric. For the full, evolving scent — and better longevity — apply directly to skin. A light mist on clothing can add staying power, but skin should come first.

5. Choose eau de parfum for all-day wear

Concentration matters. Eau de parfum (15–20% fragrance oils) lasts noticeably longer than eau de toilette (5–15%). For a scent that carries you through a workday and into the evening, reach for eau de parfum.

6. Layer your scent

Using a matching shower gel or body lotion beneath your perfume builds depth and dramatically extends longevity — a technique called fragrance layering.

7. Store your bottle correctly

Heat, light and humidity degrade fragrance. Keep your bottle out of the bathroom and away from windows — a cool, dark drawer or closet preserves it far longer.

8. Don't over-spray

More isn't better. Two to four sprays of a good eau de parfum is plenty; over-application dulls your own nose to it (and can overwhelm others). Quality concentration beats quantity every time.

Frequently asked questions

Where should you spray perfume to make it last longer?

On warm pulse points — wrists, base of the throat, behind the ears, inside the elbows and behind the knees. The warmth gently diffuses the scent all day.

Why does perfume fade so quickly on me?

Dry skin holds fragrance poorly, and lighter concentrations fade faster. Moisturising first and choosing eau de parfum both help it last.

Should you rub your wrists together?

No — rubbing creates heat and friction that breaks down top notes and speeds up fading. Spray and let it dry naturally.

What lasts longer, eau de parfum or eau de toilette?

Eau de parfum, thanks to its higher concentration of fragrance oils (around 15–20% vs 5–15%).
